Near World's View, Nyanga

15. Near World's View, Nyanga 41 x 60 cm SOLD

This painting looks towards what we call Nyanga North. It is near
a popular view-point called World's View which is on the high ground to the
right of the picture. If you follow the valley road below, through Nyanga Village 
and proceed northwards you soon come to some terraced hills of archaeological interest.

Limpopo Baobab

This lovely baobab is to be found across the border in Limpopo Province of South
Africa. It is on the road to the Tshipise hot springs, our favourite stop-over when
we drive south.

Chirambakadoma is the name given to the flat top hill in the distance. We like to stop 
here for a break when we go to visit the dinosaur trackways, it is such a lovely view 
of the Zambezi Valley.

Canonkopje is a wattled crane conservancy in Mtoroshanga and the property has many
granite kopjes.  This view is from the entrance to a large cave where pottery shards and other items of archaeological interest can be seen, all carefully preserved in situ.

As many of you know, this is a favourite spot for a walk up the granite hill. I attempted
to catch the evening light shining through the new Msasa leaves.

As mentioned in the last image of the gorge there is a huge amount of silt.
This is the view looking the other way.  We find fossils in the vicinity.

As you approach the hunting camp this is the view of the gorge which is 
fast silting up.  Was sad to see the tree had gone, the last time we visited.
Lying on the sand in the far background were at least 12 huge crocs.

This is the view from a hunting camp not far from the discovery of extensive
dinosaur tracks.

I cheated a bit with this one.   The tree is more a dusty red/brown in colour but I wanted
to play with contrasting colours to highlight the late sun shining on the trees at the back.

From a palaeo channel water runs in the Chitake river during the dry season.
You camp under a tree and put your chairs in the river bed to watch the game.
Lion stake out the area as large herds come to drink.

These baobabs, catching the evening sun, grow on a hill rise surrounded by bits of broken pottery, evidence of  a settlement prior to the creation of the Mana Pools National Park when residents were moved out of the Zambezi Valley up the Escarpment.  Close to a spring, animals congregate in the dry season in great numbers and prides of lion stake out the area.

Subjects of international palaeontological research, these cliffs erode and produce fossils, evidence of days when dinosaurs roamed, now home to a variety of game within the Mana Pools National Park.

This was a particularly dramatic evening.  We took our "sundowners" (evening drinks) to a rock on the

Quaraguza Road which overlooks the Nyanga National Park and watched rain on the one side and scudding
clouds on the other.  It was a grandstand view!

Crossing the South African, Zimbabwe border at Beit Bridge, one finds baobabs growing close to the road.  

Secret Waterfall

Nyanga, Zimbabwe. This small waterfall, flowing in a deep gully,  provides shelter for bathing as evidenced 
by an engraved stone found at the bottom of the pool, probably used for foot scrubbing.  Nearby a rock has
been worn into a bowl and would have been used for washing gold.
